Verity (2026): review and Salty Score
The Salty Score: 2/5. A delicious setup that loses its nerve. Research-based review.

The Salty Score: 2/5. A delicious setup that loses its nerve. This is our spoiler-light, research-based editorial review, informed by published criticism. We have not claimed a first-hand screening.
The setup
Verity has a premise that should practically write its own group chat. A struggling novelist moves into a successful writer's home, finds disturbing pages and begins wondering whether the woman upstairs is helpless, dangerous or a very talented author of her own alibi. The setup turns domestic envy into suspense. Anne Hathaway's performance gives the film a spark of theatrical mischief, and the central house has exactly the wrong kind of hospitality. You can see why an adaptation of Colleen Hoover's twisty book attracted this cast.
What works, and what does not
The problem, judging from the critical response, is that the film keeps circling its secrets without making their consequences feel equally sharp. Variety found the adaptation listless, while the Los Angeles Times appreciated Hathaway's arch performance and the cast's willingness to play the material at a heightened pitch. That split makes sense: camp can be fun, but it needs precision. When every look suggests a revelation, eventually a look is just a look. Suspicion becomes wallpaper, which is a terrible interior design choice for a thriller.
The Salty verdict
Our Salty Score is 2/5. There is entertainment here if you enjoy glossy, overheated mysteries and actors who know precisely how much to raise an eyebrow. Anyone hoping for a deeply unsettling psychological study may find the machinery more visible than the menace. The adaptation has the ingredients for a nasty little page-turner, then spends too much time arranging them on a very expensive kitchen counter. Hathaway gives it bite; the screenplay could have used sharper teeth.
