The Salty Score: 2/5. Beautiful longing, crowded storytelling. This is our spoiler-light, research-based editorial review, informed by published criticism. We have not claimed a first-hand screening.

The setup

Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai reaches for a love that lasts across centuries. Ram's film has an immortal traveller, a woman he keeps seeking and a train journey carrying another story about home and belonging. It is a rich set of ideas, and the Cinema Express review finds beauty in its romantic passages. Nivin Pauly and Anjali reportedly give those moments the yearning they need. For a while, the movie sounds like it might take its grand title and turn it into something unusually intimate.

What works, and what does not

The same review argues that the film keeps leaving its strongest idea to explain a series of others. Its train-bound conversations, environmental messaging and digital effects pull attention away from the human connection that gives the fantasy life. Soori's character seems underserved, and some of the visual choices reportedly flatten scenes that need wonder. Ambition is welcome, but the audience should not have to carry a notebook of themes to enjoy a love story. When every detour announces an important message, the journey can lose its destination.

The Salty verdict

Our Salty Score is 2/5. We are intrigued by the emotional reach and the moments that allow the performers and music to create their own spell. Viewers with patience for an unruly, idea-heavy fable may find more to admire than the score suggests. Still, the available criticism points to a film that trusts its thesis more than its drama. Seven seas and seven mountains are plenty of distance; this story did not need to wander quite so far from its best characters too.

Sources and review method

We weighed the published reviews below and assigned our own score. It is a recommendation based on that coverage, not a report from our own screening. Scores may change after a viewing.
