The Salty Score: 4/5. An absurd premise with a generous heart. This is our spoiler-light, research-based editorial review, informed by published criticism. We have not claimed a first-hand screening.

The setup

Baththa begins with a joke that could have run out of breath in ten minutes: a feared gangster is accidentally locked in a school washroom by a boy. Balaji Tharaneetharan instead treats the situation as a way to strip away swagger and make both characters confront fear. The result, by the account of Cinema Express, balances humour with genuine stakes for the gangster's family and the child who caused the crisis. Vijay Sethupathi has the rare ability to make a man look ridiculous without reducing him to a punchline.

What works, and what does not

The critical praise is not simply for a clever concept. Cinema Express highlights the film's restraint, its sympathy for both the boy and Baththa, and Sai Prithvi Raj's ability to stand alongside seasoned performers. That matters because a sentimental version of this story would be unbearably easy to make. A gangster learning a lesson from a child sounds like the sort of pitch that arrives with a ready-made violin solo. Here, the character's roughness remains part of the picture, so change feels like work rather than a magic washroom makeover.

The Salty verdict

Our Salty Score is 4/5. It sounds like a strong choice for viewers who want warmth without having their intelligence insulted, plus comedy that grows from character rather than a pile of reaction shots. The unusual premise may invite skepticism; it is precisely why the film's reported emotional control is impressive. We are reserving the final point for a first-hand viewing, but the published evidence makes a persuasive case that Baththa is one of October's most rewarding releases.

We weighed the published reviews below and assigned our own score. It is a recommendation based on that coverage, not a report from our own screening. Scores may change after a viewing.
