Our research-based take

The Salty Score: 4/5. Raimi makes office politics wonderfully nasty.

The deserted-island setup turns a workplace power imbalance into survival horror with a wicked grin. Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien are widely praised for committing to the escalating battle of wills, and Sam Raimi's taste for mayhem fits the premise. It sounds gleefully mean and highly entertaining. Avoid it if gore and cruel jokes are not your idea of help.

The sharpest part of the premise is that the island does not erase the office hierarchy; it gives the characters a new way to fight over it. Raimi can turn small humiliations into extravagant payback, and the reviews suggest the actors understand the joke without softening its nastier edge. That makes the film more interesting than a simple survival exercise. We would recommend it to viewers who enjoy dark comedy, physical horror and a story willing to make its characters difficult. It is a poor choice for anyone hoping for a comforting tale of colleagues learning teamwork under pressure. Our score rewards the way the screenplay and direction appear to use every reversal of power. The violence will limit its audience, but the mean streak is part of its point. The question is not who can build a shelter; it is who gets to set the rules once no boss is watching.

This is our editorial judgment from published information and critical coverage, not a first-hand screening review. Read the source coverage. We may revise the score after viewing the film.
